Kapamilya comedian Vice Ganda suffered heavy losses from the devastating Typhoon Ulysses. During the typhoon, the 44-year-old comedian was with his boyfriend Ion Perez, and friend Jhong Hilario in Balesin Island. They were staying in a resort in Balesin, and they did not expect that the typhoon will cause life-threatening damages to the property.

Balesin island, home to world-class resorts, is located in Polilio island in Quezon province. According to PAGASA reports, Typhoon Ulysses landed on Quezon province three times, which is why the province was badly-hit with flooding and intense winds. Typhoon Ulysses also did not spare the small island of Balesin.

On November 12, Vice Ganda shared updates on Twitter about their current situation in Balesin. According to Vice, due to the strong winds and relentless downpour, they had to evacuate their staff to a safer place. Vice described the situation as ‘delubyo.’

“Last night was ‘delubyo’ levels here in Balesin. Needed to evacuate our villa dahil nawasak na yung mga villas at bumagsak ang mga puno sa paligid namin. Yung pinaglipatan naman namin nawalan ng kuryente at water supply so lumikas ulit kami. Medyo kalmado na ngayon. Salamat sa Diyos!”

According to Vice, due to the strong winds brought about by Ulysses, several trees were uprooted from the ground, making the roads impassable for vehicles. In addition to that, they also lost water supply and electricity amid the heavy rains.

Fortunately, despite the massive damages in his property, Vice, his friends, and their staff were safe. However, their trip back home will inevitably be delayed due to Typhoon Ulysses.

Eksperto, Naniniwalang Herd Immunity ang Susi Para Labanan ang Pagtaas ng COVID-19 Cases sa Pinas

Amid our fight against the coronavirus pandemic, many people are placing their hopes on a vaccine. Several developers are already on the clinical trials, and many promising vaccines were found to be effective against COVID-19. But vaccine alone will not help curb the coronavirus cases in the Philippines, which is why some experts are eyeing herd immunity.

Some health experts in the Philippines claimed that herd immunity can help fight the virus. This will also solve the problems that may arise during the distribution of the vaccine.

Since it’s impossible to vaccinate all of the population due to limited supplies, not all Filipinos are guaranteed to receive the vaccine.

According to Dr. Rontgene Solante, an infectious disease specialist, they are eyeing to vaccinate at least 60 to 70% of the population to build herd immunity.

“More or less, with that 60 million, you’ll be able to achieve na more than 50% ng population natin pag nabakunahan na yan, that will create an immunity even to those na hindi nakatanggap pa ng vaccine. Dahil majority na ng population ay nagdedevelop ng antibodies.”

On the other hand, experts at the World Health Organization claimed that herd immunity might not be the most viable solution against COVID-19.

Herd immunity works by strengthening majority of the population against a certain virus or disease. The immuned individuals act as barrier or protection for the minority with weaker immune system.

While herd immunity sounds feasible at first, it’s not easy to execute. According to experts, in order to make this work, at least 70% of the population needs to be vaccinated against COVID-19. In the Philippines, that equates to more than 77 million of the population. Even if the majority are vaccinated, it will take time.
