Isang Sikat na Filipina Online Influencer, Hinuli sa Hawaii Matapos Lumabag Sa Mandatory Quarantine

Published

A Filipina social media influencer gained notoriety online after violating quarantine protocols in Hawaii. Mika Salamanca was arrested by the law enforcement authorities after she was spotted making Tiktok videos in a store, as well as dining out. Salamanca should have been at home until her 14-day quarantine is over.

The 20-year-old influencer arrived in Honolulu on July 6. To minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission, all travelers are required to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine. However, just 4 days after she arrived, Salamanca already violated the strict protocols by going out in public.

When her Tiktok videos went viral online, the Hawaii Tourism Authority notified the police for the arrest of Salamanca. It wasn’t clear if she has an attorney, but she was shortly released after posting $2,000 bail.

Shortly after her arrest, Salamanca shared a video on Instagram explaining her side. According to the infamous influencer, she was informed by a police officer that as long as she tested negative for COVID-19, she can already go out. However, she failed to name the said officer.

Authorities deny that this is true. According to Hawaii Attorney General Clare Connors, there’s no truth behind Salamanca’s alibi. Connors also stressed that since Salamanca was a ‘social media influencer,’ her actions might send the wrong message to her fans.

“None of my investigators would convey that information, as it is incorrect. The fact Ms. Salamanca has so many followers makes her actions that much more dangerous and concerning. The spread of misinformation can have very severe consequences during an emergency situation like we are in now.”

Almost a week after the passing of Jamir Garcia, the controversy is far from over. The Slapshock vocalist took his own life in their home in Barangay Sangandaan, Quezon City on November 26. Shortly after, his live-in partner, Jaya Crisostomo, took to social media to share her sentiments about Jamir’s unexpected passing.

In a video on Facebook, Jaya hinted that Jamir has passed away due to stress and mental health problems. She also threw shade against the people who allegedly contributed to Jamir’s problems. For the past few weeks leading to his death, Jamir allegedly endured a lot of pressure from others.

“Napakasama niyo! Anong klaseng mga tao kayo? Itinuring kayong kapatid, mahal na mahal niya kayo. Pero dahil sa pera at inggit, ginawa nito lahat ito sa kanya. Wala kayong mga kwenta. Wala kayong utang na loob. Minahal kayo ni Jamir, higit pa sa kapatid. Wala kayong konsensya. Hindi niya deserved itong ginawa sa kanya.”

Jaya was talking about the disbandment of Jamir’s band. Despite her fiery statement, she did not mention any names in the video. According to Jaya, there’s no need to expose the persons involved because the guilty parties already know themselves.

As a response, Slapshock’s bassist, Lee Nadela, addressed Jaya in a Facebook post. Nadela claimed that they were only speaking out about the ‘injustice’ done to him and their other bandmate, Jerry Basco. He also advised Jaya to not throw baseless allegations against them.

“Please don’t accuse me and Jerry Basco of wrongdoing, when we were just speaking out the truth and the injustice done to us. Huwag mo sanang gawing galit ang lungkot na nararamdaman nating lahat, at ipasa ang galit sa amin o maghanap ng sisisihin, dahil wala naman talagang nakakaalam ng tunay na dahilan kung bakit nagawa ni Jamir yun.”

In addition to that, Nadela also challenged Jaya to present evidence of her allegations in court. According to Nadela, even though he and Jamir had a few bumps down the road, he was still saddened for the loss of his friend.
